Empowering Birth Through Education: Meet Ashley Cutchen with Hands and Heart Birth Services!

Bringing a baby into the world is one of the most profound moments in a family’s life, yet so many parents approach birth with uncertainty and fear. But what if birth could feel exciting and empowering instead?

That’s exactly what Ashley aims to help families achieve. As a childbirth educator and doula serving South DFW, she is passionate about equipping parents with knowledge and a strong support system before labor even begins.

I had the joy of interviewing Ashley to learn more about her approach to education, and why understanding birth is one of the most powerful tools an expecting family can have.

The Journey into Birth Work

For Ashley, birth education isn’t just a job—it’s a calling that began with her own motherhood journey.

“With my first baby, I knew I wanted a low-intervention birth, but I was so overwhelmed with figuring out which hospitals and providers would be most supportive. I didn’t know where to find a doula or classes or how to afford a midwife. I started researching and creating a birth plan and learned so much about how God designed our bodies to birth perfectly when we feel loved and safe and let go of tension and fear.

After experiencing birth with a doula, I decided to become one. I quickly learned that—although I love the thrill and exhilaration of birth—the education with couples prenatally was something I truly enjoyed, too. Now, I get to walk with couples from conception to postpartum and ensure they feel supported, confident, and empowered with their birth options.”

She also makes it a point to stay local, serving families close to home so she can give each client the best possible experience.

“My best connections and resources are local. I love my town and region of South DFW, and I am passionate about improving birth outcomes in my own ‘backyard.’”

Dispelling the Biggest Myth About Birth

One of the most common fears about birth is that it has to be painful or traumatic—but Ashley is on a mission to change that.

“Unfortunately, Hollywood and ‘experienced moms’ who had unsupportive or high-intervention births tend to share only the negatives surrounding birth. It’s something women feel afraid of and anxious about.

I love educating families on the miracle of birth, how to support natural endorphins (pain relief hormones), how to let go of fear and embrace the beauty of how birth is intended to be, and more.”

Through her Birth 101 class, she helps families shift their mindset and gain a deep trust in the birth process.

Preparing for Birth with Confidence

When it comes to labor, feeling prepared matters. So what’s the most important thing parents should know before the big day?

“Families should feel confident that their birth team and environment will be fully supportive of their choices, offer informed consent for any and all necessary interventions, and that couples should have an understanding of how birth works so they can support their birth hormones and have a great experience.”

She also tailors her classes to every type of birth plan, ensuring families understand all of their options—from home birth to hospital birth, unmedicated to medicated, vaginal to cesarean.

“If a family only planned for a home birth and ends up in a hospital with an emergent issue, I want them to be aware of the risks and benefits. If a family is planning an unmedicated birth in a hospital, I want to ensure they understand how to find a supportive provider.

All couples need to learn to advocate and practice that ‘muscle’ prenatally. If a family wants to get an epidural, we discuss when it is ideal to get it, how to use a peanut ball and move in labor, and how to cope if the epidural doesn’t provide as much relief as hoped. I cover it ALL in my classes.”

Overcoming Fear and Finding Empowerment

Many expectant parents have fears about labor—but those fears don’t have to define the birth experience.

“In my Birth 101 class, we cover common fears and address them with education and truth—and then turn them into powerful affirmations! It’s one of my favorite parts of class.”

And for her, the most rewarding part of her work is when families walk away from their births feeling empowered and at peace—no matter how their birth unfolds.

"Any birth story where a family tells me they felt empowered to understand their options and make the best decisions in any birth scenario - unmedicated to an emergency cesarean - is impactful to me. Being at peace with a birth outcome because of a couple’s education, preparation, and support is my ultimate goal."

How Partners Can Support Laboring Moms

Birth is a team effort, and partners play an essential role in supporting the birthing mother. Ashley shares an easy way to remember what’s most important:

S.U.P.P.O.R.T.

S – Supportive environment – Advocate for mom’s wishes.

U – Urinate once an hour – Remind mom to empty her bladder.

P – Positional changes – Help her move every 30 minutes.

P – Praise & encouragement – Remind her of her progress.

O – Out of bed – Gravity helps with labor progress.

R – Relaxation – Help her release tension.

T – Touch – Massage, counter-pressure, and gentle touch boost oxytocin.

“Partners who are hands-on and proactive can make a huge difference in how a laboring mom feels during birth.”

The Role of Birth Education in Postpartum Recovery

Childbirth education doesn’t just prepare families for labor—it also plays a key role in postpartum recovery.

“Understanding how to support your body, release tension, aid in baby’s positioning and descent, and listen to your body can help reduce the length and intensity of labor and reduce overall trauma.”

That’s why Ashley encourages parents to take a holistic approach—preparing for both birth AND recovery.
